Low Vision Evaluation
Your visit will begin with a
comprehensive low vision evaluation with Dr. Diane M. Cates.
During this evaluation a brief history is taken and your visual
goals are discussed. It is helpful if you bring a list of
these goals with you to the examination. Common goals include
reading a newspaper or seeing stove dials, watching TV or writing a
check. Once these goals are determined, several aspects of
your vision will be measured including your best-corrected visual
acuity by a trial-frame refraction. Other measurements include
peripheral vision, the effects of lighting and the effects of
reduced contrast. With this information at hand, devices or
training will be recommended to help you reach your visual goals.

Low Vision Therapy
Once devices such as glasses or
magnifiers are recommended, you will meet with Kim Rigdon, our
Certified Low Vision Therapist. Kim will provide training on
the recommended devices and make sure you are comfortable using the
device before you take it home. Kim will also be able to
connect you with any community resources you may need such as the
Division of Blind Services, Independent Living For Adult Blind (ILAB)
or the Talking Book program to help you reach your goals.

Loaner Program
The Low Vision Center does offer a
loaner program. Devices may be borrowed for up to two weeks
for an at-home trial before purchase. A security deposit is
required.

Sunwear Evaluation
Do you notice that you are
uncomfortable from bright sunlight, on a cloudy day or even under
fluorescent lighting? You may be sensitive to glare. The
good news is, there are many different options in helping to filter
out the type of glare you are most sensitive to. At the Low
Vision Center an evaluation with these colored filters will be
performed to determine which filter allows you to function at your
best. Please ask a staff member about having the filter built
into your own glasses or sunglasses.
